Texas A&M University Prof. Zixiang Xiong visiting the Computer School of Wuhan University

Hits:17510 Release Date:2020-09-01 15:56:44

On Friday, January 12, 2018, professor Zixiang Xiong who is the faculty of Department of electronics and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, called on the Computer School of Wuhan University for academic exchanges.

Prof. Xiong gave a speech at he’s own academic experience and research area. First of all, he played a video on “Augmented Reality Sandpit Simulating Ant Colonies” for 15 minutes to attract everyone's eye. Then, he gave a lecture titled “Adaptive boosting for image denoising: Beyond low-rank representation and sparse coding”, which is their latest research in the field of denoising. Firstly, he reviewed the previous work in the relevant domain, and introduced several  methods, and analyzed the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of various methods.

In view of the existing problems in the image denoising work, Prof. Xiong's group proposed rank-1 based fixed-point analysis method. Prof. Xiong introduced the above idea and progress to us, and proofed its convergence, and demonstrated the experimental results of the technology and the some other related applications. In the report, Prof. Xiong also introduced another achievement of his research group, which is” ON THE ENERGY-DELAY TRADEOFF IN STREAMING DATA”. He’s research studied basic tradeoffs between energy and delay in wireless communication systems using finite blocklength theory, and results again showed that the energy decreases quite slowly with increasing delay.

During the free exchange stage, a participating student asked questions enthusiastically. Dr. Ding asked Prof. Xiong for advice on the application of deep learning method in denoising domain, and Dr. Wang consulted the main form of noise distribution in images. Prof. Xiong patiently introduced the relationship between deep learning and the traditional machine learning theory, and also introduced some kinds of noise sources.

Prof. Xiong’ vivid report, made the participants understand and learn the latest researches in the domain of image and communication, and made a positive impact on all the participants.
