Memorial University Dr. Lihong Zhang visiting the Computer School of Wuhan University

        Dr. Lihong Zhang who is the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland,St. John's, Canada, gave a speech at the National Multimedia Software Engineering Research Center of Wuhan University.

        On Friday, December 29, 2017, Dr. Lihong Zhang from Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland,St. John's, Canada, gave a lecture titled “Design-for-Manufacturability-Aware Automated Layout Retargeting for Analog and RF ICs”. In the report, Professor Zhang first introduced the history of the city where the university was located, its geographical location, its environment, his own academic research experience and his research direction. Professor Zhang first reviewed the work done by predecessors in relevant directions, and then introduced several methods of analog and RF automatic layout in detail, and analyzed the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of various methods. In view of the existing problems in the methods of analog and RF automatic layout, Professor Zhang's group proposed the IPRAIL technology. Professor Zhang introduced IPRAIL technology to us, demonstrating the experimental results of the technology and the related applications of the technology. In the report, Professor Zhang also introduced another achievement of his research group. In 2012 PV-Aware OPC-Inclusive Retargeting technology is proposed to solve the design problem of high-precision products and Professor Zhang showed the experimental results. In the report, Professor Zhang also pointed out the importance of the design of chip symmetry design. Finally Professor Zhang discussed the difference between the old and new processes, the new technology requires uniform surface density, the final proposed advanced technology can bring big challenges.

         During the free exchange stage, a participating student asked Professor Zhang for the difference between analogue and digital, as well as the future development trend. There is also a classmate asked about the current application of the chip, Professor Zhang patiently introduced the current IC design to the studentsand the user can choose their own needs. In this stage, Professor Zhang also discussed the difference of IC design simulation results and the actual finished product results.

         Dr. Lihong Zhang received the M.Sc. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) in 1997 and Ph.D. degree from Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg (Germany) in 2002 both in electrical engineering. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with Concordia University (Montreal, Canada), Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada), and University of Washington (Seattle, USA) from 2003 to 2006. In Oct. 2006, Dr. Zhang joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Canada, where he is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He founded and is now leading Computer-Aided Design Laboratory for Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI Systems at Memorial University, which is the first and only one in Atlantic Canada. In 2008 he was awarded Leaders Opportunity Fund from Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), which is granted to the recognized leaders who strengthen Canada’s capacity for world-class research and technology development. In 2016 he received Faculty Award for Research Excellence from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University. He has published over 100 technical papers plus one book and one book chapter. His research interests include very large scale integration (VLSI) computer-aided design, analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design, digital system and circuit design, MEMS design and design automation, wireless sensor networks, microfluidics and biosensors, and microprocessor-based instrumentation in ocean and biomedical applications. Dr. Zhang founded and currently chairs the IEEE Newfoundland-Labrador Section Computer Society, Communication Society, and Circuits & Systems Joint Societies Chapter.
